About This Service

Referrals and Shared Care at a Tertiary Hospital

The referral and shared-care service of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital.

Who We Are

A service built around the clinical question

Part of a Tertiary Hospital

Chongqing West District Hospital is a modern tertiary general hospital in Chongqing. Its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center opened in April 2026 and operates six coordinated service lines, including reconstructive surgery, aesthetic surgery, and laser- and energy-based procedures. Referrals arrive from other departments in this hospital, from other hospitals in Chongqing, and from other regions.

A Pathway, Not a Mailbox

A referral is read as a clinical question about a named patient, routed to the service that can answer it, and answered by a clinician who states what was found, what was concluded and what is planned. Where a referral belongs elsewhere, it is redirected and the referrer is told why.

Shared Care Agreed, Not Assumed

Many patients are looked after by two clinicians at once. Which clinician manages which condition, reviews which result and renews which medicine is agreed and recorded rather than left to the patient to work out. Nothing about the arrangement should leave a patient wondering who is in charge.

Our Approach

Honest about what a referral can and cannot do

A referral is a request for an opinion, not an order for a procedure. Reading a referral honestly sometimes means answering that an operation is not warranted, that the question needs more information first, or that another service is better placed to help.

✓

Explicit

We say who is responsible for what, whether care has been transferred or an opinion given, and what should prompt a new referral. Ambiguity about responsibility is how patients fall through gaps.

✓

Plain-Language

These pages are written to be read by the patient as well as the referrer. A patient who understands what a referral is, and who to contact if something changes, is safer than one who is simply waiting.

✓

Honest About Limits

A referral does not guarantee a particular treatment, a particular clinician, an appointment within a chosen timescale, or any outcome. Waiting depends on the service, the urgency of the case and the capacity available at the time. We state that rather than imply otherwise.

The Hospital

Chongqing West District Hospital

Chongqing West District Hospital is a tertiary general hospital developed as a major healthcare project for Chongqing, with a planned capacity of up to 1,200 beds and more than 300 types of advanced medical equipment. More than 200 specialists with backgrounds at institutions affiliated with Army Medical University practice across more than 40 clinical departments, supported by nine major medical centres including the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center.

The hospital's culture, shaped by military medicine, emphasises discipline, rigour, and responsibility in clinical care. For a referring clinician, the practical advantage is that anaesthesia, intensive care, imaging, pathology and transfusion are in the same building — so a complication, an unexpected finding or a case that turns out to be more serious than the referral suggested can be dealt with where the patient already is.

Refer with a clear question

If you are a clinician considering a referral, or a patient who has been referred, contact the team to discuss the pathway. We will tell you what information is needed, how urgency is judged, who will be responsible for which part of the care, and how the referring clinician will be kept informed.
